Public Health Publishes 2019 State of the County Health Report

FAYETTEVILLE – The Cumberland County Department of Public Health has released the 2019 State of the County Health Report (SOTCH). The SOTCH Report is an annual report that provides information on health priorities identified in the 2019 Community Health Assessment (CHA) and reviews recent mortality and morbidity data for Cumberland County.

The report highlights the progress of local programs and initiatives in addressing the top five health issues as identified by Cumberland County. These snapshots of progress support the Healthy North Carolina 2020 goal of making North Carolina a healthier state.

It’s important to note that this report uses information prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    CHA Priority Issues

The 2019 CHA found the following health problems in the community and identified them as the key areas for action: access to health services; economy (employment, housing, food security, and living below poverty); exercise, weight, and nutrition; public safety, and substance misuse.

    New Initiatives

The 2019 SOTCH launched four initiatives in Cumberland County – the reopening of the Baby Store at the Public Health Center, Improving Community Outcomes for Maternal and Child Health (ICO4MCH), Results Based Accountability Training (RBA), and Tobacco Control.

The Health Department continues to partner with community members to improve the health of children ages 0-5 through the Baby Store incentive program and the ICO4MCH collaborative.

The Health Department is also working to ensure that the public is kept informed about the dangers of tobacco through a comprehensive tobacco control campaign.

The SOTCH is conducted in the interim years between the CHA to meet requirements for the Consolidated Agreement between the North Carolina Division of Public Health and State Accreditation of Local Health Departments.
