County Observes Women HIV/AIDS Awareness DayMarch 10, 2021County Observes Women HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
FAYETTEVILLE – Today, the Cumberland County Department of Public Health joins the nationwide observance of National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day by reminding women that prevention is possible; testing is available; and support for women living with HIV and AIDS is encouraged.
Each year on March 10 national organizations come together to show support for women and girls living with HIV and AIDS. National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day sheds light on the impact of living with HIV and AIDS and educates and empowers women and girls to protect themselves so they can lead a physically and mentally healthy life.
Of the estimated 36,400 new HIV infections across the nation in 2018, the most recent year for which the Centers for Disease Control has data, approximately 6,700 infections (18%) were among women. Black women continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV, accounting for 57% of new HIV infections in 2018.
The Health Department encourages residents to get tested, promote HIV prevention and combat stigma associated with HIV. Free HIV and STD testing is available at the Health Department at 1235 Ramsey St. Condoms and educational resources are also available.
Due to COVID-19, all clinical services require an appointment. Adults can be seen in the STD Clinic and young people ages 12 to 19 can be seen in the Teen Wellness Clinic. Some same day and telehealth appointments may be available. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
